Unit 4: Celebrations Reflection
As studio 4 and the semester both come to an end I find it so ironic that Celebrations was our last big idea. I can find so many different meanings and ways that it is a time to celebrate this chapter in my life. As I celebrate this small victory of a school year complete, I remembered the quote Pink shared by his friend Kataria about laughter, "...Laughing people are more creative people. They are more productive people. People who laugh together can work together". This quote helps me to look into the future and learn to not only celebrate the ending of things but to celebrate the small successes that occur in every day life. I feel that I have been inspired by the work of Norman Rockwell to find the celebrations in the simple things in life.
As I look back at the artwork created I can see small celebrations in all of these. I chose to create a lion to celebrate the much anticipated journey I will be taking abroad in Tanzania. I have done a great deal of work to be able to be apart of this program and I showed that in the clothing of the lion. This lion is wearing clothes that resemble the clothing the the Maasai people of Kenya and Tanzania wear. This is a group of nomadic people that I will be visiting while abroad and my research of the Maasai has better prepared me for my encounter with them. The magazine cover is a celebration that, like I said before, has really inspired me. In this crazy life that we live now-a-days, it is so easy to get caught up in the hustle of things and not stop to appreciate the small things. I am constantly running down to the lake for weekends and I do not realize that it is such a blessing to be able to do this. Not all have this place to go to and clear their minds. Being at the lake is something I will look at much differently this upcoming summer. Additionally, my final piece that represents my lesson plan is a celebration of my future. This piece helps to push me along with confidence in my future teaching abilities. Creating the final lesson plan and integrating art, literacy, and science together shows me that I am more than capable of being an effective teacher. As I look to the future I hope to incorporate the big idea of Celebrations into my classroom.
By incorporating Celebrations into a classroom I think students will be more appreciative of the things that they have. Stopping to look at all the things we have to celebrate about rather than getting caught up in the negatives would really contribute to a healthy classroom. I hope to use Norman Rockwell in my classroom as an artist to integrate his art work and the theme behind his art. I hope to do a similar art project with my students at the beginning of the year. Depending on the grade level, the prompt to create the finger puppet could change dramatically. With younger grades students could create their favorite animal and the class could talk about similarities and differences. For an other grade it could be used to create a character from a book and the way the students imagined them to look. The student could then write something to go along with their puppet. I want to use the magazine cover the way that was discussed in our group popplet with social studies. I thought that it was such an awesome idea to integrate the big idea of celebrations and story.
